Are Bleeding Gums something to Worry About?
They might be.
Gums may bleed for a few different reasons, and it’s important to get to the bottom of it. Some possible reasons may be that you are brushing too hard or using a brush with bristles that are too firm. Improving your technique and changing your brush might be enough to solve this problem, and our hygienist will be happy to help.
Another reason that gums bleed is a bit more concerning, however. Gums that bleed when brushed or flossed is an early sign of periodontal disease, a chronic infection that can do serious damage to your gum tissue and the bone beneath. About one out of every two people in the U.S. has some form of periodontal disease, according to the CDC, so you’re not alone. If the disease is caught quickly, prompt treatment will help to resolve it. If the disease is more advanced, we will want to stop the progression of the disease and then we can discuss options to repair the damage.
