4 Steps For Keeping Your Toothbrush Clean

Schedule Appointment

When patients come for a visit to our dentist office in Huntsville, AL, we like to talk to them about proper home care. Taking good care of your oral health at home means you need the proper tools. The most basic of those tools is the toothbrush.

There are many different types of toothbrushes, and it usually comes down to personal preference. The best toothbrush for you is one you will use at least twice each day!

Keeping your toothbrush clean is important, and you can follow these steps to make sure yours stays clean and free of germs.

Step 1: Don’t Share

Sharing is great unless we are talking about our toothbrushes. Children especially need to be aware that sharing a toothbrush will spread germs.

Step 2: Store It Upright

It’s best to store toothbrushes in the open air in an upright position. This position promotes drying. If your entire family stores their toothbrushes in the same holder, be careful they are not touching each other to keep germs from spreading.

Step 3: Rinse It After Brushing

Be sure to rinse your toothbrush thoroughly after you use it so there is no excess toothpaste or other debris stuck on. Make sure your kids do this with their toothbrushes as well.

Step 4: Get a New One Every Few Months

When your brush starts to show wear and tear, it’s no longer doing a very effective job of cleaning your teeth. A good rule of thumb is to replace your toothbrush every three or four months. It’s also not a bad idea to replace your toothbrush after you’ve had an illness.
